New Beverley Hospital given greenlight by planners

New Beverley HospitalPlanners today approved plans for the new Beverley Hospital to be built.

MP for Beverley and Holderness, Graham Stuart, said he was delighted with news a new hospital has been granted planning permission.

Graham said: “This has been a long hard battle and many people have worked very hard towards this day.

“It is such good news, not just for Beverley, but for residents across the whole of Holderness who will have access to the best possible hospital facilities.”

And he added: “Thanks should go to the Primary Care Trust which has pushed for this hospital despite some fears about where it was to be sited. I am glad these have been addressed and that now the PCT can move forward with building the hospital.

“Just five years ago we feared we would lose all the hospital beds in Beverley and Holderness. To go from that situation to the granting of planning permission for this new £17 million hospital is wonderful news.

“I look forward to continuing to work with the PCT as it starts its next round of public consultation.”

Now the plans have been approved, the hospital could start treating patients in autumn 2011, replacing Beverley’s outdated 12-bed Westwood Hospital.

The new hospital is expected to employ around 40 nurses on the in-patients ward, with a further 20 district nurses and 10 intermediate care and long-term conditions nurses also based at the hospital.

I live at 46 swinemoor lane, my self and the other residents from 44 to 54 have concerns about this hospital beening built. what will be the impact on the traffic on swinemoor lane? are there plans to compulsory purchase properties on swinemoor lane to make way for road widening.

The siting of this hospital is inappropriate in almost every respect – flood plain, wild life, traffic – and has been pushed through without adequate information being given to everybody, including councillors. The obvious site is near the Molescroft ambulance station.

I welcome the approval for the building of a new hospital in Beverley, BUT I do have concerns over the location. My understanding was that three main opportunities stood out from a longer list ie Westwood Hospital, Swinemoor or the Ambulance Station. Was any comparative outline study of these possibilities done/published before the decision was taken to locate the new hospital on Swinemoor ? indeed – Why was Swinemoor chosen ? What were the reasons for not choosing one of the other possibilities ?

I agree with Neil, and many others, that the siting of the new hospital has been rail-roaded. Several public consultations have taken place about several aspects of the hospital(with, until the most recent meeting, extremely limited circulation to any lay person or group outside the immediate health-care operations). But at not one of these consultations has an answer been given as to why they were not preceded by a full consultation on the most fundamental aspect of all…where the hospital should be placed.

The health of the local environment, traffic control, and access by users outside Beverley itself are all issues on this chosen site.

It is clear that the majority of local people find the choice of Swinemoor Lane as the site for the proposed new hospital rather bizarre. Furthermore, the ERYC councillors on the planning committee were not given any choice of site, it was either Swinemoor or Swinemoor!!!!! How annoyed and powerless they must have felt. Some councillors only voted in favour because it was implied that if they delayed, then the funding would probably be lost. There is a delay now and funding appears to be still available!!
It goes without saying that a quality hospital in Beverley is highly desirable but NOT in an area where traffic problems are enormous, flooding is a regular feature and where rare species of fauna and flora thrive. The ambulance station stands out as the obvious and best location.

Do you recall the rather generous pay increases that ERYC cabinet members gave themselves a while ago? Well done you lot – they must have known that spending cuts were on the way so like the opportunists they are, they got their order in early!!
Yorkshire Post has advised that one cabinet member, Sue Lockwood, has been offered an early retirement based on the inflated salary of £117000 and the offer to her is worth in the region of £360,000 – nice work if you can get it.I suppose as usual it will go through on the nod and the bill will be picked up by the council tax payers.
I sincerely hope that serious questions will be asked about the way things get done at ERYC.
