Graham Stuart breaks all Commons records

Parliament TV

Parliament TV

Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart has smashed all previous records for the number of petitions hand in to the House of Commons at one time.

Fighting a Government plan to allow council officers, including those from the East Riding, to enter the homes of home educators, Graham received the support of fellow MPs from all the major parties.

  • Thank you Graham for coordinating this amazing event and thank you too to all the other MPs who stood up in support of Home Educators across the country. It was a joy to watch you live last night and hear the comments from all sides!

Shame on those on the Labour benches who did not attend.

Thank you so much for your support on this issue. It was heartening to hear so many MPs willingly supporting HE families.

The petition was a great way of raising awareness in Parliament of the strength of feelings against the proposals of the Badman review. Well done!

  • Thank you so, so much for organising this. I too watched live and was surprisingly moved — having been distinctly unimpressed with the previous debate… Here’s hoping it has some effect.

A huge thanks from all of us for your support and co-ordination in this undertaking. All our MP’s should be very proud to stand against this Government proposal to undermine parents everywhere.

  • Larry English

    Dear Graham
Your stand for the rights of parents, for home education, and your your achievement last night in the Commons will make us forever grateful. Sadly, our Labour MP chose not to present our petition, and with that, he and his party has lost our support for good.

  • Lydia

Thank You so much for all your hard work on our behalf. It really is appreciated.

  • Susan

Thank you for standing up for Home Educators and Home Education.

  • Christine Thompson

Thank you very much for coordinating this petition and being willing to have so many sent to you from constituencies where the MP couldn’t or would present personally.A particular thank you for presenting the petition for Wrexham.

  • Thanks for all you have done and are doing to support home educators. It is much appreciated.

    Dear Mr Stuart,
thank you so much for the work you put into this whole issue. It means so much to us parents who home educate our kids and who dread any such proposals coming into force. There are few things many of feel more passionately for than our liberty, and our children, and when the two come together….well, you can imagine how important it is to us. Again, thank you

Thank you so much for what you have done for the cause of educating children. It is massively appreciated.

  • Dear Graham
Thank you for the fantastic championing of parents and home education. It was with a grateful hopeful heart that I read of what happened in Parliament and it made us all realise that there are people who are prepared to stand together with us to fight an unfair and biased attack on families who home educate.

  • Kate Andreyev

Very many thanks for your support of home educators. I watched the petition hand in and was really encouraged.

  • Michelle Thompson

    Dear Graham,

Thank you for co-ordinating this petition and for standing up for our rights as parents. It was amazing to see the presentation in the Commons. Thank you! I trust that our voice be heard.

Thank you from a very grateful and happy home ed family.

We’d just like to say thank you for all that you’ve done on behalf of home educators. I thoroughly enjoyed watching all those petitions being handed in and I felt a glimmer of hope that perhaps the government will now have to sit up and take note of the opposition to the Badman report. Thank you so much!

  • Gill O'Donnell

Thank you Graham for all the hard work you are doing for Home Education.
From Gill and Hector…learning a lot at home.

  • Mary

Thank you Graham for co-ordinating the mass presentation of petitions to parliament regarding the Badman report. What you are doing is very much appreciated by home educating parents. My children enjoyed seeing the footage of the petitions being presented, particularly as we visited parliament last year so they’ve been in the house of commons.

  • Sarah

    Dear Graham,

Thank you so much for arranging the presentation of the home education petition and, in particular, for presenting our petition from Leeds North West. I know you must have worked very hard.

I have also appreciated hearing your comments in the debate on the Fiscal Responsibility Bill. You are indeed right that “if we do not understand the position of the parent as the chief advocate of the child, we misunderstand the essence of the important relationship between the state and children in the context of their family.”

We are baffled and alarmed at the way in which the Government seems hell bent on distrusting and sidelining families in so many areas of policy. We are convinced that strong famlilies are an essential component of a loving, healthy and civilised society. They are in danger and need supporting, not undermining.

    Best wishes

From a grateful home educating family.

    Dear Graham
Thank you so much for representing us and presenting our petition re home education, and for asserting yet again, the rights of the parent to decide what is right for their child, not the State.
Our whole family watched the complete ‘presentation’ section, and were thrilled with the whole hearted responses of everyone who presented for an on behalf of the home ed community. Thanks again.
    Sincere and very best wishes
from all this home educating family.

  • Jacqui

Many thanks for arranging the mass presentation and for the support you are providing to home educators. It is much appreciated.

  • Philip

Thank you Mr Stuart for all your efforts on behalf of home educators

  • Nicholas Hill

    Dear Graham

Thank you for all your work in coordinating these petitions. I thought the half hour of parliament TV when the petitions were read out by a succession of MPs, with varying degrees of emotion and indignation, was one of the very few optimistic, hopeful and uplifting occasions in the past 6 months or so of Badman-induced distrust, frustration and anger.

For a moment you could even imagine that the daleks in the DCSF are wrong: resistance is NOT useless.

  • Peter

Great stuff Graham – famillies should surely be central to how society organises itself, rather than treated to one form of distrust after another. Keep it up!
