Minister to visit local colleges at request of Beverley and Holderness MP

Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning, John Hayes, will visit local colleges this week.

Graham Stuart, the MP for Beverley and Holderness, who is also Chairman of the House of Commons Education Select Committee, invited the Minister to the area to learn more about the challenges facing local colleges and what they are doing to improve education and training for people in the East Riding.

Graham said, “The economy is struggling and the Eurozone is on the brink but local people are working hard to build their skills and make sure that we remain a vibrant and successful part of the country. I am determined to make sure that local experiences, difficulties and successes in East Yorkshire inform national policy making. That’s why I have repeatedly invited John Hayes to come and visit. He follows the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove and the Minister for Schools, Nick Gibb in seeing the provision we have here.

“Our colleges do a first class job but could do more. By bringing the Minister for Skills to the area I hope we can explain the particular issues local providers face. We want every student to have a choice of pathways to improve their education and go on to get a well paid job. Delivering that in a rural area is very different from in a city and it’s essential that policies are developed with rural as well as urban students in mind.

“Our colleges, Bishop Burton, East Riding and Hull College generally do a great job and I hope the Minister’s visit can help raise their profile further and encourage everyone to celebrate their contribution to local life.”

The Minister will also join Graham in visiting a local apprenticeship provider, Molineux Competition and Livery Yard. The number of apprenticeship starts has soared since this government came to power and Graham and the Minister hope to see the number and quality increase further in future.

The visits to Bishop Burton College, Hull College, along with local business and apprenticeship provider Molineux Competition & Livery Yard, will take place this Thursday starting at 12:30pm.
