Graham Stuart, the Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness, has congratulated households in the East Riding on being among the best recyclers in the country.
Residents in the East Riding recycled a record 60 per cent of their waste in June, with the amount increasing month by month since the start of the year.
The amount of rubbish going to landfill also fell by 15 per cent. This means that 941 tonnes less than compared with June last year was sent, making a substantial saving on landfill tax.
Graham said, “We all know more recycling is good for the environment, but sending less waste to landfill also means a saving for the Council, which had to spend £5 million on landfill tax last year. We all need to do our part and I am glad that the people of the East Riding are at the forefront.”
