Graham Stuart backs Whizz-Kidz Paralympic initiative

Graham Stuart, the MP for Beverley and Holderness, is encouraging young disabled people to take part in a survey being conducted by the charity Whizz-Kidz, to examine the legacy of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

The ‘Generation Inspired?’ consultation will run until Christmas, and the findings will form the basis of a manifesto to inform those delivering the Paralympic legacy about what young disabled people want.

Graham said, “After this fantastic summer of sport it is important that the views of disabled people are heard as we think about the legacy of the Paralympics.

The excitement created by the outstanding performance of our athletes presents a unique opportunity to achieve a step-change in opportunities for people with disabilities.”

Whizz-Kidz runs the largest network of young disabled people in the UK with over one thousand ‘Ambassadors’ across Great Britain. For over twenty years, the charity has provided mobility equipment, training and work placements to transform young disabled people’s lives and build bright futures. It aims to reach the 70,000 children and young people still waiting for the right equipment and skills training to live independent and full lives.

The survey can be found at http://bit.ly/WKGenInspired. Parents and carers are also encouraged to take part.

  • Hi Graham, I wonder is you were aware that a national charity that helps young wheelchair users on their road to independance is based in Beverley. Although we don’t have the publicity capabilities of Whizz Kidz, Go Kids Go (Association of Wheelchair Children) have been doing amazing work since 1990, just ask our parton TV presenter Ade Adepitan MBE. Whilst we very much applaud the way Whizz Kidz is able to raise important issues it’s really a shame that they won’t liase with other charities that they consider to be ‘competitors’. A lot of us smaller charities have a much more collaberative approach which we believe ultimately benefits all our service users. Please do take a look at our website and if you’re free on 15th December, we are running a workshop for young wheelchair users in the area at Beverley Grammar School. Please do come along and meet some of the families that we work with.
