Graham Stuart, the MP for Beverley and Holderness, is supporting the Day to Remember campaign, launched by the Department for Health and the Alzheimer’s Society, to encourage people to talk to loved ones showing signs of dementia.
A Day to Remember aims to raise awareness of the condition, and will be running national television and print advertising. The Alzheimer’s Society is providing advice on how to bring up the topic with a loved one who may be showing signs of dementia.
Initial signs and symptoms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, may include short-term memory loss, unexplained anxiety or depression, and finding it hard to follow conversations or TV programmes.
Graham said, “Dementia is a devastating condition that can put enormous strain on families. As our population ages the number of people in England living with the condition is expected to double in the next 30 years.
“As hard as it is to raise the issue with a friend or loved one, early diagnosis means you can take control of the condition and have the best quality of life possible. This is why the Day to Remember campaign is so important and I encourage everyone to get involved.”
I wish more people would get on-board and raise awareness! With an ever-growing population of the elderley the increase in Dementia cases can be expected but more and more cases are being diagnosed in middle-aged people and that ‘is’ cause for concern. I know from personal experience the stresses and strains of having parents who suffer from this condition and there are few organisations you can turn to for help… That must change!! Well done Graham for raising this here!
