Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness, Graham Stuart is seeking clarification from the Ministry of Defence on its objections to the development of some small-scale wind turbines in the constituency.
Mr Stuart said, “There are a number of small to medium sized enterprises who want to put up a small turbine to meet their own energy needs but these developments are being blocked by the Ministry of Defence due to the possibility of interference to their new radar system at RAF Staxton Wold.
This unexpected delay is jeopardising the viability of businesses in my constituency and we must act quickly to find a solution. It costs a lot of money to develop a small scale wind turbine to a stage where it can be submitted for planning and a number of businesses are understandably annoyed that they are being blocked so far down the line when their original consultations with the MoD raised no concerns with the developments.
“While I accept that military radars are a critical component in protecting UK airspace and in providing a safe Air Traffic Control service, I will be speaking personally to the Minister, Mark Francois MP, to highlight my concerns about the impact the MoD objections are having on my constituents and their ability to do business, save money, and use renewable energy. I will be urging him to ensure that his officials do everything they can to work with developers to ensure that acceptable mitigation measures can be identified.”

Some of the ‘small to medium’ contrivances in question are anything but Graham. Our beautiful county is becomming festooned with these eyesores, partly due to misleading information being supplied by the manufacturers on output and viability. Rather than concentrate on the MoD aspect, why not concentrate on the environmental impact these towers are having. No matter where you go in East Riding, these wind turbine towers loom on the horizon. The only place you can’t see them from is, surprisingly, Beverley!!
Farm Turbines now being submitted at minimum 34 Metres (over 110 feet) up to 85 metres.
These have nothing to do with green energy but are all about ‘GREED ENERGY’
In the Yorkshire Wolds & Heritage Coast we have been working closely with Greg Knight to stop these montrosities ruining our beautiful countryside. We have requested detailed maps from ERYC of Approved & Planned Farm Single Turbines of all sizes from 20 metres to 34 metres to 47 metres to 67 metres to 85 metres. These are needed to demonstrate exactly why the MOD is having problems & why the landscape is being desecrated by Farm Turbines as well as Wind Farm proposals.
I take it that you will support the call for these detailed maps to be produced for turbines of all sizes. You will find that there are hundreds in the Pipeline and villagers are saying no more already.STOP THIS DECERATION OF THE YORKSHIRE WOLDS & HERITAGE COAST.
We actually as Yorkshire Wold villagers welcome the Mod’s thorough protection of both landscape & airspace.
I completely agree Ian.
Just back from a trip to Beverley via the Wolds – lost count of the number of turbines we have seen. Please let’s dispel this “warmie” myth that applications come from small farmers/agribusinesses where all that stands between them and Carey Street is one or two “small” turbines. That is not the reality. The East Riding is being targeted by, already comfortably-off, farmers/landowners, wind developers and agents who can’t wait to gorge themselves and/or their clients at the hideously subsidised and eye-wateringly overhyped and staggeringly inefficient self-styled “green energy” trough. Every one with a parcel of land is “having a go” at getting a turbine or three. The massive upside (luvvly [subsidised] jubbly pots of cash) is so big against a downside of tiny weeny planning fees (while we’re on the subject those fees need reviewing) they would be mad (or possibly care about the landscape and their neighbours!)not to. The plethora of (quick before the government realises the Emperor is naked) applications places a huge burden on planning departments and on the general public who have to remain constantly vigilant.
Thank goodness the M.O.D is taking seriously their role of protecting our country. I agree with Ian – leave the M.O.D. to do their job and use your efforts and influence to look after the interests of the many thousands of us who live here and the many thousands more who visit who don’t want these pointless monstrosities ruining our landscape.
The implication of problems with the RAF radar at Staxton Wold has been known about for many years, the MOD has indicated at inquiries that a proliferation of turbines may have a negative effect. Indications from planning inquires is that the East Riding although surpassing the 2020 target should accept the target for the Humber region, in other words stick the all here, we should be like Lincolnshire, enough is enough.
The plethora of turbines has nothing to do with green energy, its profit, profit, profit and carbon displacement for these businesses, which if they have excess they can sell! As Alan says thank goodness someone is taking things seriously, the East Riding Council isn’t, Its been alleged to me that planning will only refuse them if the MOD do, in your constituency there is over 35 proposed sites, and several being built, your constituency has been recently targeted again by companies wanting landowners to put up turbines. Graham this plethora was predicted many years ago by groups in your area and around the country, many have sat on the fence and watch it happen, shame on them, someone has to stick up for the populous as no one else is, but no doubt the MOD will be cajoled into accepting them, re maps, I’m told even campaign groups are refused information from the council, why?
Pity the government vastly reduced the subsidy on PV panels (they don’t effect radars do they Graham) but not turbines.
One aspect is I believe that the wind industry has offered to pay for updating the system, what with?, our money gained from massive subsidies? I know the wind industry don’t like to call it subsidies but that’s what it is, don’t forget we all pay for these things through green taxes and on your energy bills.
But I hear you say we need them as the energy from coal power stations is being stopped, “Blink Oh the lights have gone out! I’ll have to finish, Oh of course its not windy”
Strange that the manufacturers believe that this “radar is able to operate without interference from wind farms” http://www.pagerpower.co.uk/pages/posts/lockheed-martin-tps-77-radar-346.php
