Local MP supports Big Energy Saving Week

The Beverley and Holderness MP, Graham Stuart, is urging households to look at ways of reducing their heating bills during Big Energy Saving Week.

New figures from Citizens Advice show that 62% of people don’t have the heating on as much as they used to, and 18% avoid using some of the rooms in their home as a way to cut the size of their energy bills.

There are many things that can be done to save on energy costs, such as checking if you are on the best tariff available with your supplier, or switching to a cheaper alternative. Insulating your home is also very effective, and is easy to have done.  Also, people should check that they are getting all the financial help they are eligible for, as up to £20 billion of benefits went unclaimed in 2011.

Graham said, “Currently around 18 per cent of households in the East Riding are living in fuel poverty but by following some good advice from the Energy Saving Trust and others, more people should be able to save money and keep themselves warm as the weather starts to get colder.”

Information and advice can be found by calling the Energy Saving Trust on 0300 123 1234, or by visiting their website http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/. Alternatively, visit your local Citizens’ Advice Bureau and speak to an adviser.
