The street suffered from poor road surface and muddy verges due to lack of proper parking for homeowners.

Now, after continued hard work by Councillor Richard Stead, work is going ahead.

Graham said: “I visited the residents in Owthorne Walk and saw for myself the state it had go into. While I also got involved in trying to help the residents, full credit must go to Cllr Stead who has not stopped working for the residents of Owthorne Walk.

“I am very glad that, working with Cllr Stead, we have been able to finally get something done about the problem – it is certainly long overdue.”

Work on the street will see new paved parking along its length as well the road being resurfaced. It is expected the work to the street will take around six to eight weeks to complete.

Graham added: “This is a great example of how local Conservative councillors can affect change for the benefit of residents.”

MP for Beverley and Holderness, Graham Stuart, will be officially opening a pedestrian underpass at Long Riston which is being given a fresh new look by youngsters.

The dull and dark walls of the underpass, which allows pedestrians to get safely from one side of the busy A165 to the other, will have a mural painted by school children to brighten it up.

Painting work on the project was due to start at 1pm on Wednesday, June 2 and continue on Thursday. Then on Friday the East Riding of Yorkshire Council will put a coat of sealant on the new artwork.

Graham will attend a special event on Friday June 11 at 2pm where he will be asked to officially open the underpass with its new paint scheme.

Graham said: “This underpass needed to be brightened up and the work being done by these young people should do just that.

“This is a great project which should help bring the community together and I am delighted to be able to perform the opening ceremony on June 11.”

Ashley Phillips Financial Services, of Arnold, is sponsoring the project paying for the paint being used by the youngsters.

The company is also supplying T-shirts with ‘I painted the underpass’ for the young artists to wear at the June 11 ceremony.

Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, today said news the Southern Bypass had been given planning permission was ‘fantastic news’ for the town.

East Riding councillors on the planning committee voted unanimously to approve redrawn plans for the £35 million bypass and park and ride scheme to the south of the historic town. Graham said: “This is really good news for people who live and work in Beverley. It will help to keep traffic out of the historic centre of the town, reduce congestion and improve safety.

“The park and ride facility is also great for those visiting or working in Beverley – this can only help to make the middle of Beverley a much more pedestrian friendly place to be.”

And he added: “Residents have been calling for a bypass since the early 1960s. I’m delighted that, following a delegation I led to see the then transport minister in 2006, we were granted the money shortly afterwards.

“My meeting with the Minister was three years ago and so praise should go to the council and everyone else who campaigned long and hard to make this a reality.”

As well as the park and ride scheme the 1.7 mile stretch of road will have rail and road bridge.

Work will also be carried out to make sure the new road does not cause potential flooding problems with storage and balancing ponds featuring in the plans.
