Graham Stuart MP to welcome local teacher Connie Walker to Parliament for the ‘Ask Her to Stand’ day

Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart is to welcome local Teach First teacher and Beverley resident, Connie Walker, to Parliament on Wednesday 21st November for the 50:50 Parliament ‘Ask Her to Stand’ day. The day, organised by the Women and Equalities Office, is part of the campaign to encourage more women to stand for local and national elections. On the day, Connie will experience the life of an MP by meeting with Graham, shadowing him and his Parliamentary staff and also by attending PMQs.

Graham Stuart MP commented: “I am pleased to be welcoming Connie to Parliament this Wednesday. It will be an excellent opportunity for her to learn more about what Members of Parliament do on a daily basis and hopefully maybe it will even encourage Connie to consider a life in politics.

“Connie is exactly the type of hard-working, conscientious and caring person we as a society need to be encouraging into politics.

“The ‘Ask Her to Stand’ day is a great way to highlight the fact that we need more women to enter politics. In 2018, 100 years after women’s suffrage was achieved, it is unacceptable that only 32% of MPs sitting in the House of Commons are women. We must do more to increase that figure and focus on closing that gap until we have 50:50 representation at all levels of Government across the UK”.

“I am very much looking forward to Connie spending the day in Parliament”.

Connie Walker commented: “I am excited to be visiting Parliament on the 21st November as part of the ‘Ask Her to Stand day’.

“It will be an excellent opportunity to spend time with my local MP Graham Stuart and also to experience the life of a busy politician. From my work as a teacher, I know first-hand how important it is to inspire people to get involved in our democracy and political processes and it is especially important for women in the centenary year of women’s suffrage. I am very pleased that Graham has invited me and I look forward to my visit”.
