Thank you for contacting me about the Prime Minister’s proposed deal on the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union.
I want to begin by reaffirming my commitment to the UK leaving the European Union on the 29th March this year. The Government has worked hard to obtain a deal which ensures we leave the EU, its institutions and stop payments to its budget while also protecting our economy and jobs.
I understand that some people may have concerns about the deal going before Parliament on Tuesday 15th January; indeed there will be those who don’t support it because they do not want to leave the EU at all or believe it is not a ‘true’ Brexit. However, I have confidence that it is the best possible deal that could have been negotiated and is the only sensible way to leave the union.
Protecting our currently growing economy and jobs is one of the main reasons for supporting this deal. If we leave without a deal there will be unnecessary restrictions and pressures for businesses across the UK which could ultimately result in people losing their jobs.
The deal will benefit our economy because we will continue to have a good trading relationship with our largest trading partner while also being free to strike our own free trade deals across the world. There is huge opportunity outside of the EU that the UK can take advantage of; however, we must be clear that, overnight, countries such as those in the Commonwealth will not pick up any potential losses from the EU market.
If we do not support this deal in Parliament then we run the very real risk of not leaving the EU. The last possible thing we need now is more division and uncertainty.
Since the 2015 General Election this issue has dominated all else. It is now time to leave the EU so we can carry on with building a stronger and more prosperous United Kingdom for all its citizens. We must come together, build bridges and move on to the next chapter in our country’s history.
I will be voting in favour of the Prime Minister’s deal on the 15th January and I hope that a majority in Parliament will support it; it is the only way we fulfil the result of the referendum.
Thank you again for contacting me about this important national issue.
