Thank you for contacting me about health education reform.
I know that the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) is delivering a programme of change for education by 2020. This is to ensure that new nurses and midwives are safe, skilled and confident when working across a health and care system that is changing at an unprecedented rate.
I am advised that within this programme, new standards of proficiency for nurses are in development. These new standards will apply to all four fields of nursing to ensure that all nurses, regardless of field, have better skills and knowledge in areas such as mental health and learning disability. The specific programme requirements will still set out what is required of programmes leading to registration within each field.
The four fields of nursing (adult, children’s, mental health and learning disability) are currently set out in legislation and any changes to these fields would require a full public consultation. The NMC held a full public consultation on the new nursing standards in summer 2017, and I am informed that there are no plans to include changes to the four fields.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
