Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, met Careers Leaders from across his constituency to discuss how Careers Hubs are being used to improve the quality of guidance that students are given in local schools.

Careers Hubs were first developed in 2018 and Yorkshire and the Humber was one of the first regions where these were located. Since it opened, Hull and East Yorkshire Careers Hub has played a crucial role in supporting careers education in the local area, with 36 out of 51 schools now engaged with the Hub on a regular basis. As a result of this engagement, the Careers Leaders, who are based in the local schools, are given training on this important topic which enables them to provide high quality guidance to their students about the best career path for them.

To learn more about how he could support this important initiative, Graham met with a range of leading local experts on the topic, which included Careers Leaders from Withernsea High School, Beverley Grammar School and Headlands School.

During the meeting the leaders explained that due to their engagement with the Careers Hub, they now have a network of dedicated people in their school who can support their students with their career plans and ensure that careers is now built into their curriculum. It is their aim to get every school and region engaged in this important project. However there is currently insufficient funding to get a careers advisor in every school.

Following the meeting, Fiona Headridge, who is the Careers Hub Lead for Hull and East Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership, commented: “It was great to meet with Graham and other local Careers Leaders to discuss the positive impact that engaging with Hull and East Yorkshire Careers Hub has had in improving the support available to young people. I look forward to continuing my work with them to ensure that there is a dedicated Enterprise Coordinator in every school in Hull and East Yorkshire.”

After speaking with the local Careers Leaders Graham said: “I was delighted to hear that positive steps are being taken to improve the quality of careers guidance for students in Beverley and Holderness. It is very important that every child receives high quality careers guidance while they are at school and I look forward to supporting the leaders in ensuring that this is the case."
